Halloween Book Tag 2023

This year's Halloween Book Tag comes from Zezee with Books. I did so many book tags for the holiday last year, but I don't want to run out of them, which is why I'm only doing one this time around. Enjoy!

CARVING PUMPKINS: WHAT BOOK WOULD YOU CARVE UP AND LIGHT ON FIRE?

There are two books that were overhyped considerably, and were TikTok darlings, that I'd like to wish away. I don't want to burn books but I'd like to blink these two out of existence. Admittedly I never read them (and never want to), but I've watched enough deep dive videos on BookTube to recognize that the prose, plot, and characters are genuinely terrible. And these books made like a bajillion dollars and got lots of five-star reviews even though the quality is so bad. I don't get it.

TRICK OR TREAT: WHAT CHARACTER IS A TREAT, WHAT CHARACTER IS A TRICK?

The narrative character, Samantha, in A House with Good Bones was so much fun to read. She had some of the most enjoyable monologues I've read in fiction. Meanwhile, the Yattering is a totally mischievous character from Books of Blood.

CANDY CORN: WHAT BOOK IS ALWAYS SWEET?

I think An Enchantment of Ravens is a sweet book thanks to the romance in it.

GHOSTS: WHAT CHARACTER WOULD YOU LOVE TO VISIT YOU AS A GHOST?

I genuinely think ghosts are terrifying so I wouldn't want to meet any character as a ghost. If I had to choose, it would be Geena Davis's and Alec Baldwin's characters in Beetlejuice. I know this isn't a book but I genuinely couldn't think of anything.

DRESSING UP IN COSTUME: WHAT CHARACTER WOULD YOU WANT TO BE FOR A DAY?

I really want to dress up as Hua Cheng from Heaven Official's Blessing. He's gorgeous. I just think his silver vambraces and necklace and belt would be really hard to make.

BLOOD AND GORE: WHAT BOOK WAS SO CREEPY THAT YOU HAD TO TAKE A BREAK FROM IT FOR AWHILE?

The forest in Pet Sematary was described in an exceedingly creepy way and I remember taking a little break from that section of the book because it reminded me of the time my sister and I walked through the woods at night. It's terrifying.

Happy Halloween, everybody!
